In our algebra class, we had been reviewing the different types of graphs. For each graph, there was a worksheet or activity. With circle graphs, we had the students take a pack of candy and count how many of each color the pack had. They had to use the table to label the color, number, decimal, percent and degree that it would represent on the circle graph.
With the questions on the back, the students applied the decimals and percents to compare how many pieces of candy would be in a larger bag of candy. Through this activity, the students were able to take ownership in their own work because they had their own numbers to work with. It was really interesting to see that most of them didn't know how to measure angles with a protractor so we had to spend a lot of time going through step by step with many examples on how to do that.
Also, a big thing that most students forgot was labeling their graphs with a title, the color, and the corresponding percentages.
